TRAGEDY
Unknown gunmen on thursday night, April 16th, killed Mr Austin Icheghe, the Ughelli branch Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Delta. His niece, Egunor Uviesa, said that the NBA chairman was shot in front of his house at No 14 Ekredjebor Street, Ughelli, while alighting from his vehicle at 9 p.m. "As soon as he came down from his vehicle, they accosted him and shot him on the head. "He was immediately rushed to a private clinic in Ughelli where he was confirmed dead,'' Uviesa told newsmen on Friday in Ughelli. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that his pool of blood was still on the spot where he was killed. NAN also reports that sympathisers were seen trooping in to console the family. The spokesman of the Police Command in Delta, DSP Celestina Kalu, confirmed the incident in a text message to NAN. The text reads: "Yes sir, he (Icheghe) was murdered by unknown gunmen last night.'

NBA BENIN MARCH FOR JUSTICE
Lawyers assembled at the Bar house on March 24th 2015 begining from 8.30 am for the march to Goverment house to push for compliance of Goverment to honour Judgment of Court on financial autonomy of Judiciary. The Dress code, was black suit, black tie.
The Benin Bar, led by its Chairman, Princess (Mrs) P.I. Iyomon and Hon. Secretary, David Maduku Esq gave a press briefing shortly before the march. The briefing was done at the Bar House before a cross section of Lawyers, including the respected Chief (Sir) Alfred Eghobamien S.A.N, and Chief H.O Ogbodu S.A.N.
Excerpts of the press briefing include the condemnation by the Benin Bar of the continued refusal of the Edo State Govt to comply with the Judgment of the Federal High Court re affirming the Constitutional provision granting Financial Autonomy to the Judicial arm of Govt, as there cannot be a true Democracy without an impartial and Independent Judiciary. The Bar also called for the resignation of the Attorney General/ Commissioner for Justice and the Permanent Secretary/ Solicitor General of Edo State, toghether with all Lawyers having political appointment to resign forthwith, having failed to properly advice the Governor and have him comply with the rule of Law, their continous stay in Government employment being a disgrace to the Bar.
The Bar also stated that the continous refusal of Governor to comply with the order of Court and meet the Judicial workers demand, and the threat to sack them even without meeting their demands, is a violation of the International Labour Organisations Convention, of which Nigeria is a signatory, and also a violation of their right to Life, having denied them their means of livelihood, for which an action will be brought against the Governor before the International Court of Justice and the Interational Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and gross violation of human rights. The Benin Bar went further to condemn the setting up of a Kangaroo Court in the premises of the State C.I.D, that undermines the essence of the aim of the strike, such Court being in a place where fair hearing cannot be guaranteed, it not being a designated place/venue for Court sitting.
The Bar warned that should the Edo State Government continue to disobey the subsisting Court Order which has not been appealed against, and not meet the demands of the striking workers, contempt proceedings will be commenced against the Edo State Govt, as well as the Office of the Attorney General/ Commissioner for Justice as well as the Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General of Edo State. The Bar stressed that Lawyers will be encouraged to present Fundamental Human Rights action claiming monetary damages against the Governor of Edo State for denying them their means of livelihood.
The Bar finally stated in clear and unequivocal terms, that Lawyers and their relatives in Edo State will not vote for the continuity of a Government that will not obey the rule of Law
